Elton John has pledged to donate $1 million to the Australian bushfire relief as firefighters continue to battle the blaze.
On Tuesday night, Jan. 7, the singer-songwriter became rather emotional as he spoke about the tragedy during his concert in Sydney.
“We should all be in awe of the work the firefighters are doing,” he told the crowd. “There are people out there who have lost their lives trying to save homes; there are people who have lost their lives and their homes.”
He then pledged to personally donate $1 million to the relief fund for those affected by the Australian bushfire disaster.
“And lastly, there’s the plight of the animals, a loss of their habitat that frankly is on a biblical scale and it’s heartbreaking. Therefore, tonight, I will be pledging $1 million to support the bushfire relief fund,” he continued.
John’s generosity earned him a standing ovation from his fans with roaring cheers and massive applause.
He also urged Australians to come together during this difficult time.
“To see what is happening here breaks my heart, so we have to come together,” he added.
The blazes, which have been burning across Australia for months, have destroyed scores of houses and wiped out entire towns. Nearly 18 million acres of land have been burned; at least 24 people and millions of animals have been killed. Moreover, the disaster has decimated nearly one-third of the koala population in New South Wales, a loss that the species may never recover from.
