An emotional candlelight vigil was held by family and friends on Sunday, Sept. 22 to remember a 22-year-old Long Beach man, Ricky Fernando Muñoz, who was killed after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver following a fight at a bar in Santa Fe Springs, California, earlier this week, according to KTLA5.

“Ricky was the most harmless, loving guy. Very passive, very fun-going. He was 120 pounds soaking wet, 5-foot-nothing, just the nicest guy. Everybody loved him,” Angel Cabral, Muñoz’s uncle, said.

Muñoz’s mother told KTLA5 that her son had been at Maggie’s Pub with his sister when someone stole his hat during an altercation, he chased the thief.

Police said that Muñoz had a fight with two other men, who chased him into the street and assaulted him and then was hit by a vehicle. The driver fled the scene.

“The two defendants reportedly chased him into the street where they assaulted him and left him on the road where he was struck and killed by a passing vehicle,” the DA’s office said, according to The Long Beach Post.

According to Whittier Police Department and Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner officials, Muñoz died at the scene of the fight, which took place just before 1 a.m. Wednesday in the 11700 block of Telegraph Road.

Police interviewed the motorist and classified the death as an accident, Whittier police Officer John Scoggins said.

Detectives arrested Edward Varela, 21, of Montebello and Kyle Michael Guinea-Mangubat, 21, of Pico Rivera on Wednesday evening, according to KTLA5.

Scoggins said that they were being held on $2 million bail each.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced on Friday that each will face a murder charge.

Varela and Guinea-Mangubat will appear in Los Angeles County Superior Court to answer to the charges on Sept. 27.

The Long Beach Post reported that if convicted as charged the two could face up to 15 years to life in state prison, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
