Former President Donald Trump, on March 30, turned on his former counsel, L. Lin Wood by endorsing Drew McKissick for South Carolina GOP chairman.
Drew McKissick is seeking re-election for a third term as the party leader that consolidated its dominance last year by extending its legislative majority, regaining a congressional seat, and ensuring a fourth term for U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham.
In 2019, McKissick successfully canceled the state’s Republican primary in favor of supporting Trump, saying that the president faced “no legitimate primary challenger” and had a “record of results” in the state.
Meanwhile, Lin Wood, a Georgia attorney and a staunch supporter of the former president, insisted that Trump won the 2020 election, but it had been overturned due to voter fraud. Even though dozens of cases alleging election fraud have been dismissed by the courts, Trump has thanked Wood for doing a “good job” for filing legal challenges against election fraud.
“My decision to run for the office was heavily influenced by my well known desire to reform local and state political parties and return power to the people… Here, I want to return power and control of the South Carolina Republican Party to the members of the party,” Wood sent an email to The Post and Courier.
Trump ultimately decided to endorse Drew McKissick in the South Carolina GOP chairman race. According to Forbes, Trump endorsed the incumbent a day after Wood declared his intention to run for the seat last Sunday.
On March 30, Trump issued a statement defending his decision to support McKissick over Wood.
“Drew McKissick has done an outstanding job as South Carolina GOP Chairman, electing more Republicans in 2020 than in over 140 years. Drew fought all the way to the Supreme Court to defend our voting laws—and WON. He will continue to grow the party and help Conservatives get elected in the Great State of South Carolina. Drew has my Complete and Total Endorsement for re-election!” read the statement.
Trump’s legal team has previously distanced themselves from Wood. According to Newsweek, Jenna Ellis spoke out against Wood in early January after he tweeted that Mike Pence should be arrested for treason and shot by a firing squad.
