Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott issued a statement Wednesday, June 23, strongly criticizing Vice President Kamala Harris in response to her announcement to visit the southern border this week, in which he claims she is ignoring the real issues of the crisis, insinuating that her trip is only a political move but not to actually solve the issues.
Abbott, in his statement, said, “Harris is ignoring the real problem areas along our southern border that are not protected by the border wall and are being overrun by the federal government’s ill-thought-out open border policies.”
The governor added that if Harris goes to the border and refuses to talk to “the riverfront residents whose homes and ranches are being overrun by gangs and smugglers,” she will have failed in her mission.
Abbot recalled that Joe Biden appointed the vice president as the one responsible for the immigration crisis more than 90 days ago, and in all this period of time, not only did she not visit the affected area, but she also did not make any statements informing the public about the plans that are being carried out to solve the absolute collapse of the borders that is affecting all the communities in the southern United States.
Since Biden’s presidency began and he implemented leftist open borders policies, Texas residents “have had their homes broken into, property damaged, and guns pointed at their heads as cartels, smugglers, and human traffickers profit off the Biden Administration’s reckless open-border policies,” Abbott wrote in his statement.
The Texas governor’s criticism refers not only to the fact that Harris has not visited the conflict zone but also to the fact that he has not received federal help to solve a problem that although it affects Texas in the first instance simply because it is a border state, it also quickly involves the rest of the country since illegal immigrants are entering and expanding throughout the territory with great speed.
In the absence of a response from the federal government, Abbott “launched Operation Lone Star in March to combat this record-high influx of people and crime.” Abbott noted that since the launch, the Texas Department of Public Safety has “arrested over 1,700 criminals, apprehended over 41,000 migrants, and seized enough fentanyl to kill over 21 million people.”
Harris is also being criticized, given that her announcement of her visit to the southern border came immediately after former President Donald Trump stated he would accept the governor’s invitation to visit the border. This inevitably invites one to think that the only objective of the aforementioned visit is a mere political act of presence and is not to solve at the root a problem that can be avoided simply by eliminating the legislations imposed by President Biden as soon as he took office, which is the real cause of the chaotic situation.
Trump also issued a statement commenting on Harris’ trip criticizing both her and President Joe Biden.
“After months of ignoring the crisis at the Southern Border, it’s great that we get Kamala Harris to finally go and see the tremendous destruction and death they´ve created—direct result of Biden ending my very tough but fair Border policies,” Trump said. “If Governor Abbott and I weren’t going there next week, she would have never gone!.”
