On Thursday, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) demanded an explanation from Rachel Levine, Biden’s nominee for assistant secretary of Health and Human Services, for her endorsement of gender reassignment surgery on minors.
According to The Federalist, during the Senate confirmation hearing to determine Levine’s tenure, Paul noted, “According to the WHO, gender mutilation is recognized internationally as a violation of human rights.”
“American culture is now normalizing the idea that minors can be given hormones to prevent the biological development of their secondary sexual characteristics. … Do you believe that minors are capable of making such a life-changing decision as changing one’s sex?” the senator asked.
According to Levine, who identifies as a transgender woman, transgender medicine is a very nuanced field. “If I am fortunate enough to be confirmed as the assistant secretary of health, I will look forward to working with you and your office,” she responded.
In the face of Levine’s evasiveness, Paul pressed his question by making it more specific, asking, “Do you support the government intervening to override the parent’s consent to give a child puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and/or amputation surgery of breasts and genitalia?”
“You have said that you’re willing to accelerate the protocols for street kids,” added the congressman who also used as an example the case of London teenager Keira Bell, 23, who at a young age underwent a medical gender reassignment process which she now regrets.
“She ended up getting these puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones. She had her breasts amputated,” added Paul, who remarked on the young woman’s anguish over her decision as a teenager.
Paul expressed concern over Levine’s failure to recognize that minors should in no way make decisions involving surgical procedures to amputate their genitalia as well as surgical treatments.
The senator noted that over the years, it had been established that minors do not have full rights, so it is a type of decision that involves parental discretion. “Will you make a more firm decision on whether or not minors should be involved in these decisions?” he said, according to RealClear Politics.
Levine again evaded the answer and only deferred to answering in kind, making mention of the supposed complexities attached to the field of transgender medicine without offering a further explanation on the matter.
“I would certainly be pleased to come to your office and to talk with you and your staff about the standards of care and the complexity of this field,” Levine added.
Paul then asserted that Levine’s response was on record as a refusal to answer an elaborate question aimed at a particular aspect of the problem with gender change processes in minor children.
“You give a woman testosterone enough that she grows a beard. Do you think she’s going to go back looking like a woman when you stop the testosterone? You have permanently changed them,” Paul said, asserting that “Infertility is another problem. None of these drugs have been approved for this.”
“I find it ironic that the left that went nuts over hydroxychloroquine being used possibly for COVID are not alarmed that these hormones are being used off-label. There is no long-term studies; we don’t know what happens to them,” he added.
Levine’s nomination to the post signifies the Biden administration’s obsession with pushing a progressive policy agenda. Last month he signed a controversial law requiring schools to allow transgender athletes to compete in sporting events involving female athletes.
