CNN may have a Cuomo crisis, with its most famous show, “Cuomo Prime Time,” losing viewership at an unprecedented pace as Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the big brother of namesake host Chris Cuomo, is embroiled in several scandals, including the cover-up of the COVID-19 nursing home deaths in the state and many sexual assault allegations.
During the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic, Chris Cuomo’s flattering depiction of his brother in “Cuomo Prime Time” helped him emerge as a hero among liberals, who was praised and fawned over. He won an Emmy and was often lauded over by the mass media.
Last year, CNN allowed the Cuomo siblings to perform a series of widely mocked, playful interviews while largely ignoring New York’s nursing home crisis. It is a prop comedy routine that would quickly become notorious in which images of the Cuomo siblings laughing while the CNN host waved a giant cotton swab has since become a symbol of CNN’s credibility crisis surrounding its coverage of New York’s governor. Chris Cuomo was chided then, and the network has since barred him from reporting on the governor’s numerous scandals.
RedState reports that viewers were also quickly turning away after the CNN host was reportedly given priority coronavirus testing after his brother ordered health department officials to provide special treatment to his relatives and “influential people with ties to the administration” at the time when the vast majority of New Yorkers were having difficulty obtaining coronavirus tests.
From April 5 to April 9, “Cuomo Prime Time” had its lowest-rated week of the year, averaging just 1.2 million viewers. The show’s ratings have plummeted by 45% from the week of January 25, and a string of humiliating stories has dogged Cuomo’s reputation since then. It also had its worst week of the year among the key demographic of adults age 25-54, averaging 263,000 nightly viewers in the coveted group. In the demo, the show is down 55% from the week of January 25, reports RedState.
It’s ironic to discover that the newest addition to Fox News has thrived when CNN’s most famous program is losing viewership.
After its debut on April 5, Fox News’ “Gutfeld!” has averaged 1.6 million viewers, outdrawing any other CNN broadcast of both total viewers and the demo.
Greg Gutfeld’s late-night broadcast defeated Don Lemon’s “CNN Tonight” by 135% in a head-to-head matchup. Lemon has averaged just 668,000 overall viewers for the week.
In total viewers from Monday-Thursday, “Gutfeld!” has also topped several broadcast network late-night programs, including ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Commenting on CNN’s “Cuomo Prime Time,” Fox News contributor Mollie Hemingway said Sunday on “Media Buzz” that “CNN deserves all the mockery in the world for how they handled this … they couldn’t have done more to push that narrative that Cuomo was doing a great job.”
