New Mexico Police found the body of a newborn baby in a trash bag at an Alcalde home on Friday, Aug. 16 and officers were told the mother may have injected the infant with heroin.

The baby’s father called police Friday because he returned to his home in La Madera from a trip and noticed that his unborn child’s mother looked like she was no longer pregnant, according to a search warrant affidavit filed in Santa Fe District Court. The man said the woman was a frequent heroin user and used the drug during her pregnancy, the Albuquerque Journal reported.

Police then conducted a welfare check at the mother’s small camper trailer in Alcalde.

The woman, who showed symptoms of heroin use, said that she had passed out after giving birth to the baby, according to the newspaper. When she woke up, the newborn was unresponsive, she said.

Officers said they “smelled the smell of death” inside the camper and started searching for the newborn baby. They found the deceased infant inside a tote in a garbage bag.

The mother has been identified, but no charges have been filed yet.
