As has happened with others of former President Donald Trump’s supporters, Democrats could now charge the patriot group Oath Keepers with sedition, applying the far-fetched concept of “domestic terrorism,” for their attendance at the demonstration in front of the Capitol on Jan. 6, but without evidence that they intervened in the riots, according to their lawyer.
The attorney and federal prosecutor who has been overseeing the riot case, Michael R. Sherwin, expressed the possibility that they could be indicted on that charge in an interview on “60 Minutes,” aired on March 21, despite the lack of evidence against them.
A little more than two months in, Sherwin’s team charged 400 suspects. Among the charges for which they could face prosecution are obstruction of an official proceeding, destruction of government property, and entering and remaining in a restricted building.
It is said that on Capitol Hill, they allegedly “equipped themselves with communication devices and donned reinforced vests, helmets, and goggles,” but no weapons were seized.
Sherwin’s projections notwithstanding, the group’s defense attorney, Carmen Hernandez, maintains, “I have seen no evidence to support a charge of seditious conspiracy against my client, Donovan Crowl,” The GateWay Pundit quoted her as saying.
It appears that the prosecution of Oath Keepers members is one of the Democrats’ moves to go after Trump supporters, similar to legislation they have been preparing since last year seeking to prosecute alleged domestic terrorists.
“Democrats in both the House and Senate are planning to draft legislation to classify MAGA rallies as ‘domestic terrorist activity’ and require the FBI, DOJ & DHS to take steps to prevent such ‘domestic terrorism.’ Sen. Durbin is leading effort along with Rep. Schneider,” said journalist and author Paul Sperry.
The wife of one of the detainees, Angel Harrelson, described the activities of Oath Keepers members, to which her husband belongs.
“The Oath Keepers are not terrorists. I pray that the truth will eventually set them all free. I hope that people will come forward and let everyone know that they were in DC on Jan 5 and 6 to show support for President Trump and to provide security for the guest speakers at the Save America Rally, as well as protecting the people in the audience,” Harrelson stated.
She added, “Following the speeches, they assisted in escorting members of the Stop the Steal party (including senior citizens) down to the Capitol, where another planned speaking event was to take place outside the House.”
She then went on to say, “They had no prior knowledge that someone might attempt to infiltrate the Capitol building. They first became aware of it after seeing it firsthand. They entered the building to support the police officers and others who were being pepper-sprayed and were in danger of being trampled by the crowd.”
Her husband, retired Army Sgt. Kenneth Harrelson, was arrested earlier in the month, leaving her family struggling financially to survive. That same day the FBI ransacked their home, the woman recounted.
