According to a recent Washington Post/ABC News survey, a majority of Americans disapprove of President Biden’s handling of immigration, as illegal crossings continue to break records month after month, causing an unforeseen emergency.
According to the June 30 poll, 51% of respondents are dissatisfied with the president’s handling of the border situation, while 33% approve.
The survey comes as the number of illegal immigrants entering the United States through the southern border with Mexico continues to rise.
Based on the current U..S Customs and Border Protection office, over 180,000 people were apprehended at the border in May, the largest amount in 20 years. The majority of the migrants were single adults.
Since getting elected, Biden has overturned previous President Trump initiatives, notably the stopping of border wall building. A border officer criticized the decision in April, telling Fox News, “The project is three-quarters done. At least, they should be allowed to tie together the primary fence. Otherwise, we’re trying to catch these people in the worst possible place. It’s just sucking our manpower.”
The Biden administration has designated Vice President Kamala Harris as the main person on the border issue, a job that has since been defined as concentrating on the “root causes” of migration. After a weeks-long backlash over her refusal to visit the border, Harris finally agreed to go to El Paso, Texas, late last month.
This newest survey, conducted after that visit, reveals her visit did nothing to change public opinion on the administration’s approach to illegal immigration.
“Things have changed so quickly and so dramatically under the Biden administration,” said Texas Gov. Greg Abbot (R). “It’s been amazing and disastrous.”
The poll revealed that Biden’s overall approval was at 50%, down 2 points from an April survey, while disapproval remained at 42%.
After over six months in office, the border has become the most pressing problem for the Biden administration. According to a recent Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll, 74% of registered voters feel the border is a problem that must be handled quickly.
