Twenty-five-year-old Leticia Guzman is in jail accused of abandoning her newborn baby daughter in a wooded area in Silver Spring, Maryland, police said.
Police said the baby was found naked in a wooded area of Tenbrook Drive after a neighbor walking his baby in a scroller heard the little girl whimpering and went to find out. It was about a mile and a half from Guzman’s house.
Investigators said Guzman’s brother said he suspected that Guzman had given birth in her room of the family home in the 1500 block of Korth Place in Silver Spring and then gotten rid of the baby.
Officers said they executed a search warrant at her home and found evidence of childbirth.
Earlier, on Aug. 17, detectives learned from a local hospital that Guzman came into the hospital and showed signs of recently giving birth. However, Guzman denied ever being pregnant to medical personnel, WUSA9 reported.
Investigators interviewed Guzman at the hospital. She told them she gave birth and left the baby at a location that she insisted she did not remember where. The authorities said Guzman provided additional information inconsistent with evidence they recovered.
Guzman was released from the hospital and transported to the Central Processing Unit in Rockville. She is charged with child neglect and reckless endangerment.
The baby remains in stable condition and is under the care and custody of the Montgomery County Department of Child Welfare Services.
“That’s something that’s within her. I don’t know. Not at this point,” said an investigator, sadly nodded his head when being asked what motive led the mother to abandon her baby.
