This touching story of an Illinois girl and her horse will warm our hearts as we see such a rare act of selflessness. A fateful encounter between the two on the road made their story unique.
Kelsey, a teenage girl, was recently driving to the next swap meet with her mother at 5.30 am in their trailer. Kelsey’s mother, for some unknown reason, wanted to take a different route that day. As fate would have it, they found a horse lying on the side of the road as they were driving down the alternate route.
The horse was almost dead from starvation. The whip marks on the horse’s body were the worst thing they found on the poor horse. Her bones were exposed, and she was so frail she couldn’t even eat the grass on the side of the road. It looked as though her previous owners may have abused her.
It’s inexcusable that anyone would do such a thing to this horse. Perhaps her previous owners felt they couldn’t profit from the horse any longer and dumped her on the side of the road. Kelsey and her mother suspected, however, that the horse may have abandoned her cruel owners herself, to look for food.
Kelsey made the decision that she could not leave the horse to die. She explained, “We just felt so bad for her, just overwhelming sadness.”
They couldn’t get the horse into their trailer no matter how they tried. Kelsey, and then she fell into a ditch. On the other hand, was adamant to save the starving horse, and she insisted on walking the horse back home.
Kelsey was determined to walk the horse home because she knew it was the best thing to do, but it was a nine-mile walk, and it took them four hours to get there.
Kelsey and the rest of her family became concerned when the horse slept for five days. Kelsey would sit in the barn the whole time, hoping that the horse could be saved. Kelsey’s wish was granted, and she awoke in the stable to a grateful horse as a result of their efforts.
The horse was later named Sunny, and she adopted Kelsey as her new mother once she moved into this caring environment.
In an interview, Kelsey was asked what kept her walking the horse the whole way. She then answered modestly: “I guess just the idea that a life’s a life’ and no matter how small it is, she needed to be saved,” she said, “My pain wasn’t comparable to what she was in herself.”
