Attorney General Merrick Garland of the Department of Justice on Monday, Oct. 4, has tapped the FBI to help local school leaders dealing with aggravated parents.
According to Politico, the move was a response to the National School Board Association’s letter alleging that there had been a “disturbing spike in harassment, intimidation, and threats of violence” against school personnel.
The most commonly known conflict between parents with educators by far had been related to their disapproval of critical race theory, dubbed a Marxist curriculum by opponents, who object to it being implemented at school, among other sensitive issues.
In a letter to the Biden administration, the NSBA said frustrated parents have started to appear at school board meetings and commit aggressive acts.
“As these acts of malice, violence, and threats against public school officials have increased, the classification of these heinous actions could be the equivalent to a form of domestic terrorism and hate crimes,” the NSBA letter alleged.
Deriding the situation described by the NSBA, Garland said he had assigned the FBI and federal prosecutors to assist the education leaders with a safe environment.
“Threats against public servants are not only illegal, they run counter to our nation’s core values,” the attorney general wrote.
“Those who dedicate their time and energy to ensuring that our children receive a proper education in a safe environment deserve to be able to do their work without fear for their safety,” he added. Garland added that anyone who poses threats to school personnel would be prosecuted accordingly.
According to Garland, the DOJ has provided a number for people to report instances of threats against school board members, officials, and staff.
A task force is also underway to elevate a way for federal officials to prosecute parents who may challenge school boards’ decisions using violent approaches.
The DOJ would further offer specialized training and guidance for school personnel to “understand the type of behavior that constitutes threats, how to report threatening conduct to the appropriate law enforcement agencies, and how to capture and preserve evidence of threatening conduct to aid in the investigation and prosecution of these crimes.”
Critical race theory was welcomed and promoted by liberals as a solution to break down “systematic racism” and social injustice starting from education. It aims to teach children concepts of race and white privilege.
The curriculum was comparable to Marxist theories, most critics against it said. Instead of solving hate and differentiation, they believe CTR can only produce the opposite result.
A Chinese mother who escaped the Chinese Communist Party said CTR was the same as the Cultural Revolution of Maoist China, which denounced and destroyed traditional culture, history, governments, and religion.
“Anything that was considered ‘old,’ feudal, a vase, Buddhas, everything was taken out and smashed,” she said.
Even parents from the black community were uncomfortable with CTR.
“[CRT] teaches blacks against whites, it teaches that whites are superior and it teaches that black students are oppressed,” said Joyce Burges, leader of the National Black Home Educators. “That is not what black parents want to teach their children.”
