Students and alumni of Loyola Marymount University (LMU), a Catholic educational institution located in Los Angeles, are calling to cancel an event that will raise funds for the abortion clinic Planned Parenthood.

As reported by Breitbart, the student group “Women in Politics at Catholic University” organized the fundraiser to be held on Nov. 5.

“The Planned Parenthood fundraiser is an opportunity for us to raise money for a cause we really care about and have fun at the same time!” reads the calendar of events on the university’s website.

Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the United States, also operates in Africa and Latin America “in partnership with more than 70 organizations,” as they say on their website. It reported performing more than 350,000 abortions in the United States doing during 2019 and 2020.

The event promoting the elimination of lives through abortion contradicts the moral teachings of Catholicism. As a result, the Renew LMU decided to send a petition to the president of the school, Tim Snyder, requesting the cancellation of the event.

Renew LMU is an alliance of Loyola Marymount University students, alumni, faculty, and donors formed to defend the institution’s Catholic identity.

In the petition, LMU alumna Samantha Stephenson wrote, “Founded by the eugenist and virulent anti-Black racist Margaret Sanger, Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion provider in the United States and has been caught red-handed in the illegal sale of fetal tissues and has been complicit in sex trafficking.”

They further urge the event’s organizing group, the “Women in Politics at Catholic University,” to seek a fundraising sponsor who truly represents the Catholic values promoted by the institution.

The petition stated, “A fundraiser in support of an organization that affirms rather than undermines the dignity of women would be an opportunity to build bridges, bringing together people from all sides of the table in support of women’s advancement.”

“This LMU event is not an academic debate but a fundraiser. As such, LMU is making an in-kind donation to the nation’s largest abortion provider. President Snyder, please take action now to prevent an egregious violation of LMU’s Jesuit, Catholic identity,” the request concluded.

Meanwhile, LMU denies that the university institution supports the event. It said that “The events, actions, or positions of student organizations, including Women in Politics, are not endorsed by the university.”

However, it stated that the activities of its student organizations are “living examples that LMU embraces its mission, commitments, and the complexities of free and honest discourse.”

As reported by the Catholic site Angelus News, Stephenson, the alumna who drafted the petition, said she has yet to receive responses from the university or the group Women in Politics.

She further mentioned that LMU, as a Catholic university, “has a responsibility to stand up for Catholic values,” and believes it has missed an opportunity to do so by not addressing the moral issues raised by the fundraiser with all members of the institution.

“If you’re going to raise money for women’s advancement in the Catholic context, rather than alienate many of the community members, you could invite them into your fundraiser and raise funds for one of the many organizations that work for similar causes without being implicated in abortions and the sale of fetal tissue,” Stephenson said.
