After Florida Governor Ron DeSantis successfully offered anti-COVID-19 monoclonal antibody treatment to the people of his state, it was rationed by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Biden administration.
For their part, Florida Republican lawmakers on Sept. 17 demanded that the Biden-Harris administration reverse its decision to ration coronavirus antibody treatments to Floridians, saying it “could end up condemning black people to death from the coronavirus,” according to Breitbart.
Clarifying the situation, DeSantis’ press secretary, Christina Pushaw, debunked the version that it was mainly unvaccinated people who were using it, according to Breitbart of Sept. 17.
“More than half of the patients in south Florida getting monoclonal antibody treatment are vaccinated and have breakthrough infections,” Pushaw said.
Based on their needs, Florida had expected to receive 70,000 doses this week, but they would only be receiving 30,000 doses.
“At a time when Florida’s hospitalization rates are rapidly declining, in part because of the State’s successful mAb deployment infrastructure, this is a dangerous reversal of the Department’s stance,” the group wrote.
“This decision was made without providing the Florida Department of Health or healthcare providers anytime to prepare for this dramatic shift,” the lawmakers continued.
“Prior to this week, health care providers were able to obtain mAb therapies directly from distributors,” the lawmakers added. “With no warning, that changed, leaving Florida providers scrambling for information and a path forward for previously scheduled appointments of this life-saving therapy.”
Regarding the drug’s effectiveness, DeSantis stated, “The clinical data on that was even better than the clinical data on Regeneron—85 percent reduction in hospitalizations.”
The Biden administration’s stated rationing generated criticism on social media.
“Unfortunately Biden now cutting FL and other red state supplies of monoclonal treatments because we have proved that they work and goes against their vax power and profits,” commented in a tweet @
On the other hand, some Floridians were grateful for the health care provided by DeSantis for free, so said Twitter user @TaktaniTribal.
“Florida is amazing. Monoclonal medicine clinics free of charge around the state. A governor that truly cares about the freedom of its citizens. I am so happy I am a Floridian and the leadership I am seeing for our beautiful state,” she wrote.
For others, DeSantis’ efficiency would make him worthy of another term in charge of the state’s governorship.
“For Florida Governor 2022! REAL competent leadership is on the way!!! A Governor for all Floridians!! You are welcome!!!” replied netizen @FloridaBlue2022.
The monoclonal antibody treatment, Ronapreve, was developed by Regeneron and Roche and was used specifically to treat then U.S. President Donald Trump in October 2020.
Under President Trump, the federal government purchased the entire supply and distributed it to states for free, according to National Review
