A Catholic University in Washington, DC, displayed on its campus a painting that, as indicated by the artist, depicts George Floyd as Jesus Christ, The Daily Signal revealed in a report.
The painting is hung in two locations at the Catholic University of America—the campus ministry office and the law school. It is titled “Mama,” and the institution claims it depicts “the Virgin Mary holding the body of the dead Christ” and not George Floyd, contradicting what the author of the work himself, Kelly Latimore, says.
“Mama” or Mom are the words that Floyd pronounced moments before his death, according to a witness who spoke at the trial of the policeman involved in his death.
According to the media outlet, a description of the painting says the artist completed the work after Floyd’s death on May 25, 2020.
“The image is evocative of the Pietà—the Mother of Sorrows,” the description also reads. “May Mary, the Mirror of Justice hear the cry of all who have known the sorrow of losing a loved one to violence and injustice. Amen.”
Catholic University inaugurated the painting at “Columbus School’s Black History Month,” according to a post on the university’s website, which also reported that the dean recited Maya Angelou’s poem “Solidarity” and told those present that “diversity is a divine gift we should cherish.”
Some members of the university were concerned about the painting. One student, who did not want to give his name for fear of reprisal, said, “There are many students, faculty, and staff who are concerned about this, but there is nothing we can do. And if we sound the alarm, we will be labeled racists.”
The political correctness and the “culture of awakening” that has seeped into all institutions has left no space for those who want to openly express their opinions, even about facts that directly blaspheme Catholic doctrine.
The student added, “The icon has no place at The Catholic University of America; it is blasphemous and an offense to the Catholic faith, but it is not surprising at all that it was put there … It is just another symptom of the liberalization and secularization of our campus.”
“Why is this there?” the student wrote anonymously in an email to The Daily Signal. “Well, simply, those in the school’s administration are woke, liberals.
“The chaplain and the rest of Campus Ministry seem to think that their liberal version of social justice is the highest virtue, even more important than authentic expressions of the Catholic faith.
“This is the same Campus Ministry who has a pride flag in their offices and allies themselves with every liberal cause that comes along, while bullying conservative Catholic students. This is the same chaplain who marched with BLM [Black Lives Matter] and barred Abby Johnson from speaking for Cardinals for Life (the pro-life club on campus),” the student’s email said.
