A petition to make Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant, who died in a helicopter crash, the official NBA logo has become the first change.org petition to reach 1 million signatures by 2020.
Justin Bieber, Snoop Dogg, and Usher have all backed the move, which had earned 2.6 million signatures, well on its way to its 3 million targets.
“When I started this petition I was just some 16-year-old kid who had just lost his role model and hero,” wrote Nick Moghtader of Vancouver, Canada, who had registered the petition.
The current NBA logo features a white Jerry West silhouette—another LA Lakers legend—and has been around since 1969.
West later became general manager of Lakers, in the 1996 draft, picking a 17-year-old Bryant straight out of high school.
Bryant went on to become a five-time NBA champion over 20 seasons with the Lakers, retiring with 33,643 points, 7,047 rebounds and 6,306 assists over 1,346 career NBA contests and making history from first to last.
The Sunday, Jan. 27, accident in Los Angeles killed Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and seven other people.
