A front-runner in the Democratic Party’s bid for presidency was criticized for describing new rules that permit legal firearms to be brought into places of worship as “absolutely irrational” on Dec. 30.
The Daily Wire exposed comments Joe Biden previously made about Texas Senate Bill 535, which allows “licensed handgun owners to legally carry their weapons” into churches, synagogues, and other places of worship.
“We are talking about loosening access to have guns, to be able to take them into places of worship, store them in school, it is just absolutely irrational,” the Democratic presidential candidate said according to a C-SPAN video shared on Twitter. “It is totally irrational.”
The candidate questioned Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott for absentmindedly signing the bill into law while, at the same time, dismissing any suggestion that doing otherwise would be in conflict with the U.S. Constitution.
“The idea that we do not have elimination of assault type weapons, magazines that can hold multiple bullets in them is absolutely mindless,” Biden continued on the video shared on Twitter. “There is no violation of the Second Amendment. It is just a bow to the gun manufacturers who are members of the NRA. It has got to stop.”
He also ruled out reaching any mutual agreement with both sides of the aisle on the matter.
“I think this is no compromise,” he said on an MSNBC video shared on Twitter. “This is one we have to just push, push, push, and push, and push, and the fact of the matter it it is going to result in some of them defeated.”
The remarks frustrated one Daily Wire reporter who used social media to accuse Biden of adopting a extreme policy on gun control, especially after two Texan congregants used their own firearms to stop a shooting at the West Freeway Church of Christ in White Settlement, 40 miles west of Dallas on Dec. 30.
“Joe Biden goes far-left on guns, says there is ‘no compromise’ on the issue and that it must be his way,” Ryan Saavedra said on Twitter. “A good guy with a gun saved countless lives inside a Texas church.”
White Settlement Police Department confirmed two people including a parishioner died, and the threat was neutralized within “six seconds” due to the quick thinking of others who shot the attacker.
“Two of the parishioners who were volunteers of the security force drew their weapons and took out the killer immediately, saving untold number of lives,” Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said, adding his support for the new law according to The Associated Press.
Abbott used social media to thank the volunteers for swiftly ending the tragic shooting.
“Thanks to security at the church in White Settlement for swiftly ending the attack,” the governor said on Twitter. “We are working with local law enforcement and elected officials to ensure they have all resources needed to respond to this event. Texans will unite as always.”
