The BL Fact-checking Verification Standards

At the BL, we are aware that one of the important components of trustworthiness is the assurance that the facts that we published are accurate, fairly represented and placed in context. We encourage all of our writers and editorial staff to consistently strive to understand that the more transparency regarding your editing and news gathering process, the better.

All of us at the BL are committed to doing our best to publish accurate information across all of our content including photos, videos and articles. We take many steps to ensure accuracy. We investigate claims with skepticism and question assumptions. We often challenge conventional wisdom and regularly confirm information with subject-matter experts because we seek to corroborate what sources tell us by talking with other informed people or consulting documents. We verify content, such as technical terms, stats, etc., against source documents or make clear who is providing the information. We may share relevant components of a story with a primary source or an outside expert to verify them.

We stand by the information we publish as accurate, and if it’s not, we change it as quickly as possible. We are honest and transparent with our readers about the magnitude of our errors.

We guide our content generators to ask the following questions when they fact check information in a quest for the truth.

        How do you know?

        How can you be sure?

        Where is the evidence?

Who is the source, and how does the source know?

        What is the supporting documentation?

We regularly welcome, encourage and track feedback from our readers, viewers and sources regarding the information that we publish via comments, like, shares and email at [email protected]. We understand that we are a business striving to satisfy our target market consumers and always want to know if they are unsatisfied and how we can make them whole.
