The U.S. Dept. of Justice is now investigating former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele, author of the controversial Trump dossier, as it seeks to uncover the origins of the Russia probe that supported FBI warrants to spy on the Trump administration and initiated the two-year Mueller Investigation.
Michael E. Horowitz, Inspector General for the Dept. of Justice, is leading the investigation.
According to a State Dept. memo written by Deputy Assistant Secretary Kathleen Kavalec and obtained by the group Citizens United (www.citizensunited.org), Steele met with a high-level official at the State Dept. on Oct. 11, 2016 and admitted he was working on behalf of a political client who was “keen to see this information come to light prior to November 8,” the date of the 2016 election.
As previously reported, documents released by the FBI indicate that Steele received payment for the dossier, at least in part, from the law firm Perkins Coie that was working for both Hillary Clinton and the Democratic National Committee.
In what appears to be the clear co-mingling of a political campaign and an FBI investigation, Steele then served as a confidential informant for the FBI in order to obtain the first of several Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrants used to place the Trump campaign under surveillance. This took place just 10 days after Steele’s meeting with the State Dept.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-N.C.) is seeking to declassify a sensitive document, which he claims will show that the FBI knew Steele’s dossier was politically motivated and that it lacked independent corroboration.
“There’s a document that’s classified that I’m going to try to get unclassified,” Graham said in an interview on May 12. “The bottom line is that the dossier has never been independently confirmed. It was used to get a warrant [by the FBI]. They knew the author of the dossier was on the Democrat Party payroll… There’s really no verification, other than media reports that were generated by reporters that received the dossier.”
