Rep. Bob Gibbs (R-Ohio) is calling for his fellow Republicans to uphold the Constitution that he claimed President Joe Biden has skirted, urging them to consider impeachment proceedings like the way Democrats treated former President Donald Trump.
In a letter sent to House Republicans, Gibbs claimed that President Biden has taken “unconstitutional” several executive actions since he assumed office, with the two most obvious offenses including the unilateral extension of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s moratorium on eviction and the continued failure to adequately defend the southern border.
The congressman pointed out that Biden ordered the CDC to extend the eviction moratorium on Aug. 3, “blatantly ignoring” the Supreme Court which warned two months earlier that his administration needs congressional authorization for such extension.
In addition, Biden failed to uphold his constitutional duties to secure the southern border and has even taken steps to empower his Justice Department to sue states who take matters into their own hands when the executive branch neglects to secure the border and protect those states’ citizens.
Gibbs claimed that the Biden administration has worsened the COVID-19 pandemic by letting coronavirus-infected illegal migrants into the country.
“Is is bad enough that the border is not secure, must the Biden administration contribute to the worsening of a situation they deemed so dire?,” the lawmaker questioned.
Gibbs also argued that Biden’s “shameless disregard for the limitations of his executive authority is a violation of his oath of office.”
He reminded his Republican colleagues that impeachment is a serious issue, but they have witnessed “the politically motivated impeachment proceedings of the previous four years” from Democrats.
But, “President Biden continues to disregard his constitutional duties and boundaries,” he said, adding that he believed “conducting a sober, evidence-based discussion regarding impeachment is warranted.”
Gibbs is not the first lawmaker to seek an impeachment against Biden. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has also called for impeaching President Biden for abuse of power.
