High-profile supporters of anti-police protests are responsible for an ambush-style shooting involving two Los Angeles law enforcement officers, a political commentator said.

Conservative author Candace Owens blames extreme anarchist protesters, mainstream news outlets, and celebrities for encouraging Californians to open fire on two sheriff deputies in Compton, 17 miles south of downtown Los Angeles, on Sept. 12.

“Why does this happen? Because pea-brained celebrities that are idolized like @King [LeBron] James tell young black men that they are ‘literally being hunted,'” she said on Twitter. “This is the natural result of such hyperbolic, dishonest rhetoric. The racist, anti-police, ‘Black Lives Matter’ lie is to blame.”

Owens criticized the National Football League for allowing athletes to display the name of accused rapist Jacob Blake on their sports equipment.

“Why else does this happen? Because when pea-brained athletes put the name of an alleged RAPIST on their helmets and jerseys, criminals begin believing they are acting as heroes,” she said on Twitter. “Black Lives Matter and the complicit media organizations, athletes, and entertainers are [also] to blame.”

She attached surveillance footage of a suspect who walked up to a police car, then pointed and fired what appeared to be a handgun before fleeing the scene.

The LA County Sheriff’s Department confirmed both male and female deputies suffered severe gunshot wounds.

“The gunman walked up on the deputies and opened fire without warning or provocation,” the department said on Twitter. “One male deputy and one female deputy were ambushed as they sat in their patrol vehicle. Both sustained multiple gunshot wounds and are in critical condition. They are both currently undergoing surgery. The suspect is still at large.”

The pair are still in a serious medical condition in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

“They are both still fighting for their lives, so please keep them in your thoughts and prayers,” the department said. “We will update this thread with information as it becomes available.”

The department was disappointed to report several extreme anarchist protesters had earlier tried to prevent first responders from moving the injured deputies through the hospital building entrance for immediate emergency treatment.

“To the protesters blocking the entrance and exit of the hospital emergency room yelling, ‘We hope they die’ referring to two LA sheriffs ambushed today in Compton: do not block emergency entries and exist to the hospital,” the department said on Twitter. “People’s lives are at stake when ambulances cannot get through.”
