A gun-rights advocacy is counter-suing an elected New York Democrat because a recent legal action against the group was politically motivated.
The National Rifle Association (NRA) is taking New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) to court because she is putting political advancement ahead of public interest.
The association rejected James’s legal case that top executives were allegedly involved in unlawful financial misconduct for three years that ended up costing the organization more than $64 million. It also expressed serious concerns about previous New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, who indicated New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and other Democrats pressured James to pursue the NRA for “purely political purposes.”
“In a telephone call to Tom King, an NRA director, in late 2017, Schneiderman emphasized that while he opposed the NRA’s positions on the Second Amendment, he felt troubled by recent, extraordinary pressures being placed on his office by powerful political interests,” the court documents said according to the Daily Caller. “[King] was privately warned by then NYAG Eric Schneiderman that Governor Cuomo was engineering an attack on the NRA … [and] told Cuomo would use every resource to pursue his lifelong dream of defeating the NRA, and an ‘investigation’ of our association was on the horizon.”
The revelation disappointed King who had believed the governor would do the honorable thing.
“I always expected better of the governor, and hoped he would rise up to honor the principles under which he was elected,” he said according to the publication. “I feel compelled to share this story today for all who hoped this state would put its people first—not use them as pawns to advance Cuomo’s partisan agenda.”
NRA President Carolyn Meadows described James’s original lawsuit as a “baseless, premeditated attack” on the constitutional right to bear arms just months out from the 2020 general election on Nov. 3.
“It is a transparent attempt to score political points and attack the leading voice in opposition to the leftist agenda,” she said on Twitter.
“This has been a power grab by a political opportunist—a desperate move that is part of a rank political vendetta. Our members will not be intimidated or bullied in their defense of political and constitutional freedom … we not only will not shrink from this fight, we will confront it and prevail.”
Political commentator Melissa Tate believes the association has played an important role in defending the rights of African Americans, especially those who lived in former Confederate States.
“The NRA was founded to help arm black people in the South to protect themselves from Democrat terror,” she said on Twitter. “Now Dems have re-written history about the NRA … [and] tried to paint the NRA as an evil lobbying corporation when, in reality, it is made up of every day Americans like myself who want to preserve our 2nd Amendment which is under assault.”
Tate believes the objective of the left is to “abolish the police and then disarm” Americans to allow extreme anarchist protests to take control of the nation.
“They want their roving gangs of Black Lives Matter and Antifa terrorists to have their way with us,” she said. “If the last few months have not shown you the importance of our 2nd Amendment, you are not paying attention.”
