It is a story about the tragic life and love of a talented young couple. It was the love for art and the shared spiritual path that brought them together, ironically though, it was the very reason that tore them apart.

Mr. Huang Guangyu

Mr. Huang Guangyu was a successful young artist. Having graduated from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts with a major in oil painting, he frequently had his works displayed in exhibitions.

His study focused on the techniques and spirit of classical painting. In March 2012, his works were displayed in an exhibition at the Guangzhou City Museum and after that they were introduced in the book ‘Theory of Color and Tone’ by Li Zhengtian, a well-known Chinese artist and philosopher. Other artists have offer high praise for his painting skills.

With a strong belief that art must always stick to truth and beauty, he continuously honed his techniques in a realistic style. At the same time, he started to learn painting style of the great masters of the Renaissance.

Ms. He Wenting

Ms. He Wenting, born in Hunan province, was a young girl of talent in both writing and painting. Becoming a member of the Yongzhou writers’ association at the age of 15, she had a number of stories and comics published in national newspapers. She was also a talented poet.

In 2010, she went to Guangzhou to study aesthetics and painting, through which she developed a keen sense of color and beauty.

There, she met a young artist who shared the same aspirations with her.

When the young couple began dating, they realized that they already shared two major things in common: both are Falun Dafa practitioners and artists who seek to revive traditional realistic painting through their works. They eventually got married in 2012 and settled in a village near Guangzhou University Town, southern China.

Both fell in love with traditional Chinese culture and began to show its beauty using Western oil painting techniques. Their techniques were gradually perfected in line with the uplifting of their spiritual life, through adherence to the teachings of Falun Dafa on the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance.

A sudden blow

Sadly, a life full of hope and artistic passion of the young couple was devastatingly ruined by the inhuman, brutal persecution campaign against Falun Dafa, launched by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) since July 1999. To this day, it has been causing severe suffering and death of countless innocent Chinese people.

Just two years after their marriage, in December 2013, the young couple were illegally arrested for distributing anti-firewall software to help people learn the facts about Falun Dafa and the inhuman persecution by CCP regime. The policemen also ransacked every corner of their house. And they were illegally detained until May, 2014, when finally being sentenced to three years in prison, as reported by minghui.org, the official website exposing the truth about the brutal persecution of Falun Gong by the CCP.

Unwavering faith

“A bright light hit the wall in front of me. Counting the days since I have been here, I felt as if I have shed many layers of skin already. Before I came here, I was in my warm, comfortable bed and had everything everyone envies: a happy marriage, an ideal job, a bright future, and I was expressing myself with my paintbrush. Everything changed overnight,” Ms. He wrote in her diary.

When the couple was eventually released in November 2016, Ms. He managed to bring out the tissue paper that she used as a diary to secretly record torture and abuse she suffered while in prison. She wanted to bring all crimes committed by the CCP to light.

“How I wanted to paint again, everything I have gone through: the feeding tube, the handcuffs, the iron window, the logo on the uniform! I clearly saw the bruises on my hands, the dried blood on my lips, my bare feet, the filth in my hair… tears run down my cheeks again.” _ Ms. He Wenting

She also describes how she went through unbearable mistreatment and humiliation in the prison, “Every morning I was tied down for force-feeding. Five to six male guards and male inmates pinned me down on the bed and pushed the feeding tube through my nose. I almost passed out because of the excruciating pain, and constantly threw up. I heard my own agonizing screams. In the past, I only read about the force-feeding torture online, now I am experiencing it myself.”

However, her faith has never wavered, “I am willing to give up fame and fortune for conscience and justice. A window has separated two worlds; a tall wall has blocked people’s morals and judgment. But indestructible righteous thoughts will see me through any perilous situation.”

The life of Huang and He has since become gloomy, but the beauty and purity inherent in their works would still shine.
