Caixin reported that dairy company Maiquer, from Xinjiang, was investigated by the municipal supervision department after it failed a pure milk control.
The State Administration for Market Regulation on July 3 urged the Xinjiang Market Supervision Bureau to investigate this issue. It stated that the detection of propylene glycol in Maiquer pure milk was caused by the excessive use of food additives and flavors in production.
The administration tested 23 batches of pure milk products from Maiquer and another 14 major competitors. The results of the 23 batches analyzed showed that only six batches of pure milk produced by Maiquer had propylene glycol detected, and the detection value was over 0.3g/kg.
The result of the two batches of pure milk first detected on June 28 was more than 0.3g/kg.
According to the authorities, propylene glycol is not allowed in pure milk.
It is an approved food additive that can be used in pastries, and the maximum usage is 1.5 g/kg and 3.0 g/kg, respectively.
World Health Organization recommendations state that up to 25mg of propylene glycol per kilogram of body weight is the acceptable daily amount.
On July 2, Maiquer Group said that the two unqualified batches of Maiquer pure milk were produced on April 21 and May 7 and that they have been removed from the shelves.
Food industry analyst Zhu Danpeng朱丹蓬 told Caixin that food safety is the topic of most interest and concern to everyone currently. Moreover, the Xinjiang milk category has been relatively popular recently.
On Weibo’s hot search on June 30, this unqualified milk issue appeared more than 740,000 times.
After that tragedy, even today, people mistrust food safety regulations.
