After Russia launched an attack on Ukraine, Beijing watched cautiously when the world isolated Russia both economically and diplomatically; they hold a wait-and-see attitude but are unwilling to give up their attempt to unify Taiwan by force.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying at a Press Conference on Feb. 24, said, “China is closely monitoring the latest developments. We call on all sides to exercise restraint and prevent the situation from getting out of control.”

After Bloomberg asked if China considers Russia’s action an invasion, Chunying responded, “I would like to stress once again China’s consistent position. We should pursue common, cooperative, and sustainable security for all countries. The legitimate security concerns of all sides should be respected and resolved. We hope all sides will keep the door to peace open and continue to work for de-escalation through dialogue, consultation, and negotiation and prevent further escalation.”

As Vladimir Putin’s ties with the West deteriorate and Moscow faces more sanctions over the Ukraine issue, China is prepared to provide Russia with an economic lifeline.

Financial Times provided information from AidData, an international research lab at the College of William & Mary in Virginia, who said Russia is Beijing’s most significant beneficiary of official sector loans, with a total of $151 billion between 2000 and 2017.

According to Reuters, on Feb. 4, Russia has agreed to a 30-year contract to supply gas to China via a new pipeline. It will settle recent gas shipments in euros.

China also lifts restrictions on Russian wheat imports. General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China announced on Feb. 27 that importing wheat from the whole territory of Russia is allowed.

The Chinese regime is facing a significant test, particularly in light of Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, because China has refused to rule out the potential of military unification of Taiwan for many years. China does not want the international spotlight to shine on them.
