Roxana Mărăcineanu, France’s only official representative to the Winter Olympics in Beijing, announced on Feb. 8 via Twitter that she canceled her trip to Beijing due to a positive COVID-19 test.
She posted on Twitter, “I have a heavy heart not being able to go and support our athletes and tell them our consideration. My thoughts are with them. I continue my missions remotely.”
Mărăcineanu was scheduled for Beijing from Feb. 11 to 15 and will not participate in the closing ceremony on Feb. 20.
France is hosting the next Olympic Games and must send representatives to the closing ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics.
President Macron has made it plain that France will not boycott the Beijing Winter Olympics, according to Mărăcineanu, who indicated in an interview with RMC radio on Feb. 7 that France’s attitude is to have a dialogue with the Chinese side on numerous problems.
Several democratic allies of the United States have diplomatically boycotted the Beijing Winter Olympics and not sent big formal delegations.
