Experts are warning about a potential Covid outbreak in China surpassing that of Shanghai and Beijing combined, affecting at least 50 millions people.
This simmering outbreak starts in Linshui County, Guang’an City at the western province of Sichuan with about 500 local cases within the latest week. At present, Linshui County, the hardest hit area, has been locked down. The authority confirms the infected virus is the Omicron variant.
According to Jiemian News, Linshui County was the epicenter of the current Covid-19 outbreak in Guang’an City, which began on May 9. The first case was an online car-hailing driver who traveled between Linshui and Chongqing – a close-by city. At present, the epidemic has spilled over to many surrounding areas.
Besides discovering infected people in Guang’an City, since May 10, 3 first infected people in Linshui County have also been found in Jiangbei District, Yubei District and Nan’an District of Chongqing City.
The driver’s close contacts also tested positive with Covid later.
According to the Guanghan Financial Media Center, the outbreak had also spilled over to Shenzhen, Guangdong Province.
At the same time, Guang’an Linshui County decided to lock down the city. On May 10, Linshui County officially issued a notice, deciding to conduct a closed static management from May 10.
And on May 16, Linshui County officials decided to conduct a new round of county-wide testing.

The article pointed out that the COVID-19 epidemic in Guang’an City, Sichuan, which borders Chongqing, continued to intensify last week. The number of new local cases was second only to Shanghai, which was the eye of the Omicron virus storm.
Some experts interviewed by the newspaper pointed out that Quang’an city is relatively close to two mega cities Chengdu and Chongqing. These two cities are the fourth pole of China’s growth. Once the epidemic prevention breach occurs in Guang’an, it may impact the Chengdu-Chongqing region, causing at least 50 million people to be shrouded in the shadow of the pandemic. On May 14, a YouTube video post said that the epidemic in Guang’an , Sichuan has suddenly become tense. The new increase in cases has begun to rise. And local residents have begun to stockpile grain and meat. City-wide testing would follow suit soon.
