Senior NATO official, Mircea Geoană, says the rapid expansion and modernization of Chinese military power poses a challenge to global security. A great deal of action must be taken to ensure the continuation of a democratic way of life, which is the goal NATO must defend.

Geoană says that China is not an adversary of NATO. Still, its military modernization, heavy investment in nuclear missiles and hypersonic missiles, and coercive diplomacy have security implications for all NATO Allies.

He said that like-minded democracies worldwide, notably those in the Asia-Pacific region. We have to do more, and all together.

Geoană made the remarks during a seminar on May 11 at the Hudson Institute, a Washington, D.C., think tank, during which he addressed topics related to China, Afghanistan, and Russia.

Geoană said they feel that the jury’s still out, but they do not believe that the strategic partnership between Russia and China will weaken.
