According to the data released by China’s National Health Commission on Friday, March 18, China reported 2,461 confirmed cases, including 2,388 local cases and 73 imported cases from abroad.

Among the local cases, 1,834, or almost 80 percent, were confirmed in Jilin province.

In the past few days, a number of local officials have been removed from their posts or punished as the outbreak has gotten out of control in several parts of China. Changchun City in Jilin Province announced on Thursday, March 17, that 16 Chinese officials were dismissed or warned for their ineffective epidemic prevention. Previously, Jilin Mayor Wang Lu and Changchun Jutai District Mayor Li Xin were removed from their posts on March 12. In addition, six officials in Guangdong Province were also removed from their positions.
