FBI Director Christopher Wray expressed in a “60 Minutes” interview that China’s espionage and cybersecurity threats are on a scale that’s never occurred in history. He noted that the Chinese regime targets innovation, trade secrets, and intellectual property.
Christopher Wray said that China’s targets span most of the economic sector. America’s stolen personal and corporate data is more than every nation combined. He said, “They are targeting our innovation, our trade secrets, our intellectual property, on a scale that’s unprecedented in history.
“We are now moving at a pace where we’re opening a new China counterintelligence investigation about every 12 hours … All 56 of our field offices are engaged on it … It’s a measure of how significant the threat is.”
According to private security firm Mandiant, China hacked at least six state governments in the previous year, revealing undisclosed vulnerabilities in the governments’ networks.
Ukraine has also accused China of carrying out a massive cyberattack on its military and nuclear installations in the run-up to Russia’s invasion.
