Hu Xijin, the former editor-in-chief of the Chinese government mouthpiece Global Times, said on Twitter that if the US wants China to impose sanctions on Russia, Washington should first give Beijing 1,000 nuclear warheads.
To justify this claim, he explained in English that China shares a 4,000-kilometer border with Russia, a nuclear powerhouse. Therefore, maintaining a friendly relationship between the two countries has always been key to China’s national security.
According to the independent research institute “Stockholm International Peace Research Institute” (SIPRI), Russia currently has 6,255 nuclear warheads, the US has 5,550, and China has about 350.
According to the 2021 US Department of Defense’s Annual Report on China’s Military Strength, Beijing continues to build up its nuclear arsenal. It could have 700 portable warheads by 2027 and up to 1,000 by 2030.
